I’m sick of winter. I said I wasn’t going to critique or knock (bad) music and only share music I really liked. I will continue to keep that promise. But as hard as I try to fight against it, what I really want is to wallow in my mild case of seasonal affective disorder and indulge in some cold weather complaining. It’s March 9th and the outside temperature barely scrapes 6 degrees Celsuis here in Paris.
Enough.
I don’t need an artificial lightbox or to start wearing “happy” colors. What I do need is some cheery, light, effervescent music to get me through these last few winter weeks. It’s too damn cold for introverted, intellectual music.
With that in my mind, I came across a quirky group called Naive New Beaters. About two minutes after checking out some of their videos, I noticed sunshine outside my window. Yes! Let there be light! These guys are goofy and their songs, while “minimalist”, bring me back to my youthful, cartoon watching days. They clearly do not take themselves seriously and seem to be having a good time making catchy, nonsensical beats. This, I can smile about.
The rock-electro franco-american trio formed in 2004 and are made up former high school classmates who go by their stage names; Martin Luther B.B. King (guitar), Eurobelix (keyboard) and David Boring (lead vocals). See, I told you these guys have a sense of humor. I don’t care if what they do is “naive” or “bubble gum pop”, I’ll take it….at least until we officially reach spring.
If you’re ready to come out of hibernation, Naive New Beaters play this Friday March 13th at Le Cap in Aulnay sous Bois. For all of us who want to remain under a heavy blanket awhile longer, they hit La Cigale in May.
